NCIS: Sydney Season 2 Trailer Ignores Season 1’s Finale Cliffhanger (& That Could Be Worse)

The new NCIS: Sydney Season 2 trailer raises concerns by completely ignoring the shocking cliffhanger from the Season 1 finale, which could spell trouble for the spinoff. In the dramatic conclusion of Season 1, JD’s son, Jack, was kidnapped by the international criminal Yaroslav, who demanded the exchange of Ana Niemus—currently in custody for questioning. Despite upper management’s refusal to negotiate, the team, with the help of Rankin, coordinated the exchange. While JD safely returned with Jack, Ana killed Yaroslav before escaping, leaving JD with Yaroslav’s phone. When JD called a number on the phone, Rankin’s phone began ringing at headquarters, hinting at a betrayal that promised immediate consequences in Season 2. However, the new trailer shows a more relaxed tone, which could mean things are worse than they seem.

In the brief Season 2 teaser, JD and Mackey are back to their usual friendly banter, and when asked about their organization, JD casually says “AFP,” while Mackey adds “NCIS,” joking about their collaboration. This lighthearted exchange seems to suggest that the team is still intact, a surprising contrast to the tension left by Season 1’s finale.

Rankin’s role as the task force boss, however, raises questions. With his potential criminal connections and desire to maintain power, he could be scheming to protect himself, possibly at the cost of the team’s unity. The relaxed tone in the trailer could indicate that the team is unaware of the full extent of Rankin’s betrayal, leaving them vulnerable to a delayed fallout. This delayed tension suggests that the consequences of Rankin’s actions may not be immediately apparent but will likely surface later in the season, creating an even bigger threat for the team.

By sidestepping Rankin’s betrayal in the trailer, NCIS: Sydney may be setting up a false sense of security, only to reveal deeper complications as the season unfolds. The team’s future could be in jeopardy if Rankin’s full influence and ties to the criminal world come to light later on.

While some shows have ended, characters such as Sam Hanna have returned, as shown in “NCIS: Hawai’i.” Other recognized figures, like as Dwayne “King” Cassius Pride from “NCIS: New Orleans,” could appear on other shows. CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach and CBS Studios President David Stapf expressed openness to such crossovers if they serve the story organically.
