NCIS Season 22, Episode 7 Review: The Team Gets Overshadowed by Guest Stars

NCIS Season 22, Episode 7: A Mixed Bag That Highlights Guest Characters Over Torres

NCIS Season 22, Episode 7, “Hardboiled,” is a polarizing episode. While it delivers solid entertainment and avoids predictable clichés, it sidelines the main cast, especially Nick Torres, in favor of guest characters. The episode centers on one of Torres’ confidential informants, Amber Carnahan (Sara Paxton), who becomes the prime suspect after her husband is found dead. However, instead of diving deep into Torres’ character, the story shifts focus to Amber, making the core NCIS team feel more like supporting players in her narrative.

Though the episode is meant to explore Torres’ role, it falls short in fully developing his character. Wilmer Valderrama’s portrayal of Torres is as strong as ever, but the script doesn’t allow him to go beyond predictable beats. Torres is initially suspected of being involved in the murder, but this is quickly cleared up, and his character arc mainly revolves around his loyalty to Amber. The one moment of growth comes when he develops mutual respect with Harold Lamb (Sam McMurray), a military veteran turned investigator. This brief but meaningful interaction is a highlight, but overall, Torres doesn’t get the spotlight fans may have hoped for.

What saves the episode is its fresh approach to the guest characters. The writers avoid the usual tropes, steering clear of turning Amber into a femme fatale or making her romantically involved with Torres. Instead, the mystery surrounding her character keeps viewers intrigued without falling into predictable traps. Sara Paxton’s performance as Amber is key to this, as she conveys her character’s desperation without overplaying it, making her pleas for help feel genuine.

Veteran actor Sam McMurray also shines as the cynical Harold Lamb, adding depth to the guest storyline. His portrayal of a world-weary investigator provides some of the episode’s best moments, including a memorable line after he discovers the true killer.

While NCIS Episode 7 isn’t a deep exploration of Torres, it benefits from its well-crafted guest characters, offering a refreshing twist on the usual procedural formula. The focus on Amber and Harold’s journey gives the episode a unique feel, but fans may still wish for a more impactful story centered around Nick Torres.

NCIS airs Mondays at 9:00 p.m. on CBS.
