NCIS Season 22, Episode 6 Review: The CBS Show Takes a Page From Tulsa King

Breaking Down NCIS Season 22, Episode 6: “Knight and Day”

Spoiler Alert: This recap delves into the major plot points of NCIS Season 22, Episode 6, “Knight and Day,” which aired Monday, Nov. 25, on CBS.

The latest episode of NCIS attempts to strike a balance between humor and emotional depth but struggles to find its footing. Titled “Knight and Day,” the episode centers on Agent Jessica Knight in a story that intertwines family drama with mob intrigue, reminiscent of the Paramount+ series Tulsa King. While the two shows differ in tone and style, this episode shares thematic parallels with Tulsa King by combining a character’s past connections with the mob and their present-day relationships.

A New Assignment for Agent Knight

The story begins with Agent Jessica Knight reluctantly taking on a personal protection assignment. The target: Melinda Martin, a wealthy socialite who has found herself in danger. At first glance, the threats appear to stem from her high-profile lifestyle, perhaps related to her charitable foundation or her philandering husband. However, as the episode progresses, it’s revealed that Melinda’s past is the real cause of her troubles.

Years ago, Melinda was involved in a criminal underworld in Kansas City. Her former connections have resurfaced, and the bad guys now have her in their sights—not her organization or her family, but Melinda herself. As Knight digs deeper, she discovers a history Melinda has long tried to keep buried.

Humor Meets High Stakes

The episode tries to inject humor into the narrative to lighten the tension. While comedy has been a hallmark of NCIS over the years, blending humor with heavier themes is no easy feat. In “Knight and Day,” the comedic elements feel forced, undermining the gravity of Melinda’s situation. The juxtaposition of mob-related danger with moments of light-hearted banter creates a tonal inconsistency that detracts from the story’s impact.

Additionally, gaps in the plot leave viewers with lingering questions. The mob’s motivations and Melinda’s involvement in her own rescue are not fully fleshed out, leaving the narrative feeling incomplete.

A Missed Opportunity

While NCIS has often excelled at character-focused episodes, “Knight and Day” doesn’t quite deliver. Despite the focus on Jessica Knight, the episode doesn’t dive deeply into her character development. Knight remains a steadfast and capable agent, but the story does little to explore how this assignment affects her personally or professionally.

Similarly, while Melinda Martin has the potential to be a compelling character, her backstory and current predicament are not given enough screen time to resonate fully.

Final Thoughts

“Knight and Day” attempts to blend humor, drama, and action but struggles to maintain a consistent tone. While the plot’s premise offers intrigue and potential, its execution leaves something to be desired. For fans of Jessica Knight, the episode provides a welcome opportunity to see her in the spotlight, but it ultimately feels like a missed opportunity to deliver a truly impactful story.

NCIS Season 22 continues to air on Mondays at 9 p.m. on CBS, with episodes available for streaming on Paramount+.
