NCIS fans are still wondering if Leroy Jethro Gibbs will ever return, and now Mark Harmon is finally addressing the possibility – while also clarifying where he sees the character today.

Speaking on the NCIS: Partners & Probies podcast, Harmon reflected on his ongoing connection to the franchise. Although he no longer appears on-screen, he continues to narrate NCIS: Origins, which follows a younger Gibbs in the 1990s, played by Austin Stowell.

When asked about Gibbs’ current life in the storyline – including details like the character’s dog – Harmon kept things light, saying he doesn’t have firm answers and simply trusts the creative team’s direction.

On the topic of a possible on-screen return, Harmon said he hasn’t been actively approached for a comeback. He explained that he prefers not to push himself into storylines and is content supporting the franchise in a different role.

Harmon also emphasized that NCIS: Origins is its own project with a new cast, including Kyle Schmid, and a different tone from the original series. He praised the actors and writers for respecting the legacy of the show while building something new.

While fans continue to speculate about Gibbs’ fate – especially after recent episodes hinted at his influence still being felt – Harmon’s comments suggest he’s comfortable letting the character remain off-screen, retired, and at peace in Alaska, rather than returning full-time.
