Why NCIS: Los Angeles Was Really Canceled After 14 Seasons – The Truth Behind the Ending

After a remarkable 14-year run, NCIS: Los Angeles signed off in May 2023 with a two-part finale. As the first spinoff of NCIS, the series followed the undercover agents of the Office of Special Projects in L.A., led by fan favorites Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) and G. Callen (Chris O’Donnell).

So why end a show that still had solid ratings?

The biggest factor appears to be cost. Long-running dramas become increasingly expensive to produce, and networks often look to trim budgets – even for steady performers. Reports indicated the decision surprised many involved, especially after a successful franchise crossover boosted attention.

Ending on a high note

CBS timed the announcement so producers could craft a proper sendoff. Both leads embraced the moment:

  • LL Cool J thanked fans and called it “the perfect time to end on top of our game.”
  • Chris O’Donnell celebrated the “amazing 14-year ride” and expressed gratitude to viewers.

Showrunner R. Scott Gemmill and CBS executives echoed that sentiment, praising the cast, crew, and loyal audience while promising a finale that honored the characters’ journeys.

The legacy

Premiering in 2009, NCIS: Los Angeles became one of CBS’s longest-running scripted dramas, building a devoted fanbase with its mix of action, teamwork, and heart. While the series has closed its case, its impact on the NCIS franchise – and its fans – remains strong.
