NCIS Hit by Major Shake-Up, and Mark Harmon Is at the Center of It

Mark Harmon has continued portraying Leroy Jethro Gibbs as the narrator of NCIS: Origins-even appearing onscreen twice in the prequel-but he hasn’t been seen on the main NCIS series since his Season 19 exit in “Great Wide Open.”

After wrapping up a case with Timothy McGee in Naktok Bay, Alaska, Gibbs chose to stay behind, and the two haven’t spoken since. Sean Murray recently told CinemaBlend what he hopes would happen if McGee and Gibbs reunite.

Following a discussion about the 2025 episode “Page-Turner,” which featured a nostalgic nod for longtime fans, Murray shared what he believes Gibbs would want to address first: whether McGee is still living by the values Gibbs taught him.

Murray noted that McGee has always sought Gibbs’ approval, especially due to his strained relationship with his own father. Gibbs became the father figure McGee never had, making their bond particularly meaningful.

Murray added that much of McGee’s confidence and growth over the years comes from Gibbs’ encouragement. If the two characters were to meet again, McGee would likely ask, “Am I doing okay, boss?”-still seeing Gibbs as his moral compass.

Whether Gibbs and McGee will reunite remains uncertain. In the current timeline, Gibbs is living quietly in Naktok Bay and hasn’t shown any interest in returning to Washington. While he stays in touch with old colleague Vera Strickland-who recently told McGee that Gibbs is proud of him-Mark Harmon himself hasn’t suggested he’ll return to NCIS, focusing instead on Origins.

Still, many fans hope that Gibbs and McGee will share at least one more moment before NCIS eventually ends. For now, McGee continues to excel both at the agency and at home-something Gibbs would undoubtedly approve of.
