POPE FRANCIS DIES AT 88, “On Easter Monday of the faith.”

A Final Farewell to Pope Francis

The Vatican has officially confirmed that Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.

His death occurred peacefully at his residence in Casa Santa Marta — just one day after the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics celebrated Easter Sunday. The timing of his passing stunned the globe, creating a profound emotional ripple across all faiths.

 Vatican Pays Tribute

Shortly after the announcement, Vatican News shared a commemorative image featuring a serene portrait of Pope Francis with the inscription:

“Pope Francis, 1936–2025.”

The simple yet powerful caption read:

“Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.”

⚠️ Declining Health in Final Months

Pope Francis had been dealing with ongoing health issues in recent years. Just two weeks before his passing, he made a surprise appearance in St. Peter’s Square, his first public moment since a brief hospitalization.

Although the visit gave hope to many, his weakened appearance was noted by both clergy and laypeople.

His passing marks the end of a papacy remembered for openness, modern reform, and unconditional compassion for the poor, the marginalized, and the misunderstood.

The Life of Pope Francis: From Humble Beginnings to the Vatican Throne

Early Life: Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio

Pope Francis was born as Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
He was the eldest of five children in a working-class Italian immigrant family.

His father, Mario, was a railway worker, and his mother, Regina, was a homemaker. Despite growing up in modest surroundings, Jorge was a curious, compassionate, and devout young man from an early age.

 A Calling to Serve

In his early 20s, Bergoglio entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) — a Catholic religious order known for intellectual rigor and missionary work. He was ordained a priest in 1969, dedicating his life to service, faith, and education.

He later became a theology professor, seminary rector, and eventually rose through the Church’s ranks.

 Archbishop of Buenos Aires

In 1998, Bergoglio was appointed Archbishop of Buenos Aires, and in 2001, he was made a Cardinal by Pope John Paul II.

He gained widespread respect for living modestly — cooking his own meals and taking public transport, even as a high-ranking Church official.

During Argentina’s economic crisis, he stood beside the poor, advocated for justice, and became known for his humility and unwavering focus on the underserved.

Papal Election: A Pope for the People

On March 13, 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Bergoglio was elected as the 266th Pope — taking the name Francis, inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of humility and peace.

He became the first Jesuit pope, the first pope from the Americas, and the first non-European pope in over 1,200 years.

A Papacy of Progress and Heart

Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis championed causes often avoided by the Vatican, including:

  • Climate change and environmental protection

  • LGBTQ+ compassion and inclusion

  • Economic inequality

  • Refugee rights and immigration

  • Clergy sexual abuse accountability

  • Interfaith dialogue and peacebuilding

He was known for his approachable nature, heartfelt speeches, and his habit of breaking protocol to connect directly with everyday people — especially the poor, sick, and forgotten.

️ Legacy of Light

Pope Francis leaves behind a legacy that will be studied for centuries — a bridge-builder, reformer, and gentle force in a complex world.

Millions remember him not just as a religious figure, but as a moral leader who brought warmth, reason, and humility to the global stage.

He may be gone, but his message lives on in every act of kindness, every voice for justice, and every heart moved by compassion.

️ Rest in Peace, Pope Francis (1936–2025)

A shepherd to the people. A light in darkness. A legacy of love.
