Gibbs & Franks Have More Bonding To Do in ‘NCIS Origins’

NCIS: Origins dives deeper into Gibbs’ past while balancing both intense flashbacks and meaningful character bonds. Set in 1991, this prequel series follows young Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Austin Stowell) as he starts his NCIS career under the mentorship of Special Agent Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid) at the NCIS Camp Pendleton office. Viewers witness Gibbs navigating the trauma of losing his wife and daughter as he builds connections that will define his future.

In the recent episode, “All’s Not Lost,” NCIS co-showrunners David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal shared insights with TV Insider about the deepening relationship between Gibbs and Franks. “This is a huge step for both of them,” North said, “with Gibbs putting himself out there and Franks allowing him into his personal life.” Monreal added that these scenes add layers to their bond, revealing complexities that will resonate in the larger NCIS storyline.

Episode 4 also highlights a heartfelt moment between Gibbs and Mary Jo (Tyla Abercrumbie), another key character. North teased that Mary Jo’s role as the “backbone of the office” and her connection with Franks will be explored more, shedding light on the mutual respect they share.

As NCIS: Origins progresses, expect to see more Easter eggs, new flashbacks, and familiar faces from the original series in their younger years. Notably, the character Sandman from the premiere will make a return, adding even more intrigue to Gibbs’ early journey.
