How ‘NCIS’ Said Goodbye To David McCallum (And The Surprise Guest Who Showed Up To Pay Last Respects)

In a moving tribute, NCIS paid homage to David McCallum’s beloved character, Donald “Ducky” Mallard, in Monday’s episode following the actor’s passing on September 25 at the age of 90.

As anticipated, the episode titled “The Stories We Leave Behind” began with Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen, who co-wrote the episode) discovering Ducky’s lifeless body in his home, dressed in his signature monogrammed pajamas, with his faithful corgi by his side.

Reflecting on Ducky’s passing, Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) remarked at NCIS headquarters that quietly departing in one’s sleep isn’t the worst fate. Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) emphasized Ducky’s fulfilling life and expressed a desire to celebrate it.

True to Vance’s sentiment, the episode featured nostalgic flashbacks from previous seasons, echoing Ducky’s poignant assertion that “we all die twice; when our bodies give out, and again when our stories stop being told.” Viewers were taken on a journey through memorable moments, including interactions between Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), Ziva David (Cote de Pablo), Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), and Gibbs.

Amidst the reminiscing, the team delved into a new case involving soldier Danny, whose reputation was tarnished by ambitious councilman Allan Berger. Suspecting foul play, the team uncovered a web of deceit and corruption, ultimately clearing Danny’s name and honoring his memory with justice.

As the case concluded, the team gathered for Ducky’s memorial. In a touching gesture, DiNozzo presented Palmer with a symbolic gift — a bowtie reminiscent of Ducky’s lab attire, symbolizing their enduring friendship.

The episode ended with a heartfelt title card honoring McCallum’s memory, reflecting on his profound impact on the show: “In memory of our dear friend and colleague David McCallum. We will miss you.”
