More than 20 seasons and a handful of spin-offs later, the \u201cmothership\u201d is still going strong, even if the cast of characters looks very different than it did back when the series started in 2003. And of course, now the name\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em> is synonymous with primetime ratings dominance \u2014 as evidenced by all the hit shows that bear the same acronym!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat makes\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em>\u00a0so special and what people love about it is the characters,\u201d\u00a0<em>NCIS: Origins<\/em>\u00a0co-showrunner and former\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em>\u00a0writer David J. North said at the Television Critics Association press tour in July. And that has remained true no matter which characters have been part of this show. The proof is in the fact that even after major characters like Tony DiNozzo (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvguide.com\/celebrities\/michael-weatherly\/3000000048\/\" rel=\"follow\">Michael Weatherly<\/a>), Ziva David (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvguide.com\/celebrities\/cote-de-pablo\/3000054360\/\" rel=\"follow\">Cote de Pablo<\/a>), and Leroy Gibbs (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvguide.com\/celebrities\/mark-harmon\/3000385695\/\" rel=\"follow\">Mark Harmon<\/a>) departed, the show is still a fan favorite.<\/p>\n<p>While details about the upcoming\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em>\u00a0Season 22 are scarce, the lack of knowledge won\u2019t stop us from asking questions \u2014 questions like when\u00a0<em>NCIS\u00a0<\/em>Season 22 will premiere, who is coming back for Season 22, and what the season will be about. There\u2019ll be some [tragedy] this season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If we add to that the uncertainty surrounding Katrina Law\u2019s return as Jessica Knight and what her decision might mean for her relationship with Jimmy Palmer, plus the fact that SSA Alden Parker (Gary Cole) is recovering from the injuries sustained in the Season 21 finale, there\u2019s a lot for fans to be concerned about when it comes to Season 22 of\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em>. Never let it be said that the mothership has nothing up its sleeve.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>When does\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em>\u00a0Season 22 premiere?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>NCIS<\/em>\u00a0Season 22 will debut Monday, Oct. 14 at 8\/7c, and the show will immediately be followed by the two-hour series premiere of prequel\u00a0<em>NCIS: Origins<\/em>.\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em>\u00a0will move to the 9\/8c slot beginning Oct. 21. After a shorter than usual Season 21 due to the writer\u2019s strike, Season 22 is set to have 21 episodes.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvguide.com\/news\/cbs-fall-tv-shows-2024-the-complete-schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow noopener\">Head here for a look at CBS\u2019s complete fall schedule, including when everything premieres<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em>\u00a0about?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>NCIS\u00a0<\/em>is a military police procedural, often dubbed the \u201cmothership\u201d of the\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em>\u00a0franchise, which includes the series\u00a0<em>NCIS: Los Angeles<\/em>,\u00a0<em>NCIS: New Orleans<\/em>,\u00a0<em>NCIS: Hawai\u2019i<\/em>,\u00a0<em>NCIS: Sydney<\/em>, and two new series,\u00a0<em>NCIS: Origins<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>NCIS: Tony &amp; Ziva<\/em>. The series revolves around a team of special agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service \u2014 which just so happens to be a real government agency. The characters and the concept were originally introduced in a pair of episodes of the CBS series\u00a0<em>JAG<\/em>\u00a0in 2003, before becoming its own series that fall.<\/p>\n<p>As of 2024,\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em>\u00a0is the third-longest-running scripted, live-action U.S. prime-time TV series currently airing, surpassed only by\u00a0<em>Law &amp; Order: Special Victims Unit<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Law &amp; Order<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Who stars in\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>NCIS\u00a0<\/em>has gone through quite a cast turnover in 21 seasons. But then again, what show going into Season 22 hasn\u2019t? The fact that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvguide.com\/celebrities\/gary-cole\/3000029386\/\" rel=\"follow\">\u00a0Gary Cole<\/a>\u2018s SSA Alden Parker is only the second boss the NCIS team has had is quite an accomplishment.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvguide.com\/celebrities\/sean-murray\/3030400361\/\" rel=\"follow\">Sean Murray<\/a>\u2018s SSA Timothy McGee and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvguide.com\/celebrities\/brian-dietzen\/3030095007\/\" rel=\"follow\">Brian Dietzen<\/a>\u2018s Chief Medical Examiner Jimmy Palmer have been around for all 21 seasons so far. The team is rounded out by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvguide.com\/celebrities\/rocky-carroll\/3030400002\/\" rel=\"follow\">Rocky Carroll<\/a>\u2018s Leon Vance, who has been with the show since Season 5, and relative newcomers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvguide.com\/celebrities\/wilmer-valderrama\/3000383645\/\" rel=\"follow\">Wilmer Valderrama<\/a>\u00a0as Special Agent Nick Torres, who joined the team in Season 14,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvguide.com\/celebrities\/diona-reasonover\/3030542854\/\" rel=\"follow\">Diona Reasonover<\/a>\u00a0as Chief Forensic Scientist Kasie Hines, who joined the team in Season 15, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvguide.com\/celebrities\/katrina-law\/credits\/3000432022\/\" rel=\"follow\">Katrina Law<\/a>\u00a0as Special Agent Jessica Knight, who joined the team in Season 18. Longtime cast member David McCallum, who played Dr. Donald \u201cDucky\u201d Mallard, passed away after Season 20.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><em>NCIS<\/em>\u00a0cast:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Gary Cole as Supervisory Special Agent Alden Parker<\/li>\n<li>Sean Murray as NCIS Senior Special Agent Timothy McGee<\/li>\n<li>Wilmer Valderrama as Special Agent Nick Torres<\/li>\n<li>Katrina Law as Special Agent Jessica Knight<\/li>\n<li>Brian Dietzen as Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Jimmy Palmer<\/li>\n<li>Diona Reasonover as Chief Forensic Scientist Kasie Hines<\/li>\n<li>Rocky Carroll as NCIS Director Leon Vance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Is Katrina Law leaving\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>One of the biggest questions coming into\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em>\u00a0Season 22 is about the future of Special Agent Jessica Knight, who in the Season 21 finale was offered a job as the REACT team\u2019s chief training officer. The issue? That job is at Camp Pendleton, not anywhere near the DC Offices. Fans thought Knight would decline the job, as she\u2019d previously declined the opportunity to take over her father\u2019s role as the Special Agent-in-Charge of the NCIS Far East Field Office in Yokosuka. Instead, Knight said yes. So, does that mean Katrina Law is leaving\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do aim to please, and we think the audience will be satisfied with where they see this go. Sometimes that satisfaction is bittersweet and sometimes it\u2019s just pure joy. You\u2019ll have to wait to find out which one it\u2019s going to be,\u201d co-showrunner Steven D. Binder<a href=\"https:\/\/tvline.com\/lists\/katrina-law-ncis-status-jessica-knight-leaving-season-22\/ncis-1\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u00a0told TVLine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Law hasn\u2019t been confirmed to be leaving\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em>\u00a0and her character and Jimmy Palmer make up the only ship in the show, which fans have affectionately dubbed Knight In Shining Palmer, so chances are wherever the storyline takes Knight, she won\u2019t be going anywhere. Or at least, we hope so.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How does\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em>\u00a0Season 22 tie in to\u00a0<em>NCIS: Tony &amp; Ziva<\/em>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>With\u00a0<em>NCIS: Hawai\u2019i<\/em>\u00a0cancelled in 2024, there are officially three other<em>\u00a0NCIS<\/em>\u00a0properties outside of the original:\u00a0<em>NCIS: Sydney<\/em>,\u00a0<em>NCIS: Origins,<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>NCIS: Tony &amp; Ziva<\/em>. Of those three,\u00a0<em>NCIS: Sydney<\/em>\u00a0doesn\u2019t have much connection to the main\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em>; it takes place on another continent, with a cast completely unrelated to the characters we know. And though the shows might end up crossing over at some point in the future, there\u2019s nothing that ties it to the show\u2019s main DC offices. The other two, however, are a very different story.<\/p>\n<p><em>NCIS: Origins\u00a0<\/em>is a direct prequel to\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em>\u00a0that traces the origins of the show\u2019s most iconic character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs \u2014 played by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvguide.com\/celebrities\/mark-harmon\/3000385695\/\" rel=\"follow\">\u00a0Mark Harmon<\/a>\u00a0for 19 seasons. The show is set in 1991, shortly after the deaths of Gibbs\u2019 first wife Shannon and daughter Kelly, and follows Gibbs as a new agent at the NCIS Camp Pendleton office.\u00a0<em>NCIS: Tony &amp; Ziva<\/em>, meanwhile, brings back two fan-favorite characters from\u00a0<em>NCIS<\/em>, Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David, alongside their daughter Tali, and finds them on the run in Europe for reasons yet undisclosed.
