Robert Redford \u2013 two-time Oscar winner, beloved actor of\u00a0The Way We Were<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid<\/em>, acclaimed director of\u00a0Ordinary People<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Quiz Show<\/em>, and founder of the Sundance Institute \u2013 has died at 89.<\/p>\n

\u201cRobert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in Utah, surrounded by those he loved,\u201d publicist Cindi Berger confirmed. He died in his sleep; no cause was given.<\/p>\n

With his boyish charm and signature blond looks, Redford\u2019s career spanned six decades. He won five Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, Kennedy Center Honors, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His defining roles included\u00a0The Sting<\/em>,\u00a0All the President\u2019s Men<\/em>,\u00a0The Natural<\/em>, and\u00a0Out of Africa<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Born Charles Robert Redford Jr. in 1936, he overcame early struggles and personal tragedy \u2013 including the death of his mother when he was 18 and later, the loss of two sons. After early stage success, he shot to stardom with\u00a0Barefoot in the Park<\/em> and became one of the most bankable stars of the 1970s.<\/p>\n

He turned to directing with\u00a0Ordinary People<\/em>\u00a0(1980), which won Best Picture and Best Director. Later films included\u00a0A River Runs Through It<\/em>,\u00a0The Horse Whisperer<\/em>, and\u00a0The Legend of Bagger Vance<\/em>. Even in his 80s, he appeared in Marvel\u2019s\u00a0Captain America: The Winter Soldier<\/em>\u00a0and Netflix\u2019s\u00a0Our Souls at Night<\/em>\u00a0with Jane Fonda.<\/p>\n

Beyond Hollywood, Redford left a lasting legacy as a champion of independent film through the Sundance Institute and Film Festival, and as a passionate environmental activist.<\/p>\n

He is survived by his wife, Sibylle Szaggars, two daughters, and seven grandchildren.<\/p>\n
