As of the now, NCIS sits behind SpongeBob SquarePants, SEAL Team, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, while South Park, MobLand, and Yellowstone dominate the number one, two, and three spots on the list, respectively.

A spin-off of JAG, the mainline NCIS series premiered back in 2003 and immediately established itself as the latest hit television sensation. The series kicked off with a leading cast consisting of Mark Harmon as NCIS Supervisory Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Sasha Alexander as NCIS Special Agent Caitlin Todd, Michael Weatherly as NCIS Senior Field Agent Anthony DiNozzo, Pauley Perrette as NCIS Forensic Specialist Abby Sciuto, David McCallum as Doctor Donald “Ducky” Mallard, and Sean Murray as NCIS Field Agent Timothy McGee. Over the course of 22 seasons and counting, NCIS has undergone some major shakeups, including the exit of longtime stars such as Mark Harmon and the introduction of incoming fan favorites including Gary Cole’s NCIS Supervisory Special Agent Alden Parker.

When NCIS Season 22 left off earlier this year, Cole’s Agent Parker was reeling from the murder of his father, Roman, presumably at the hands of Kansas City mob boss Carla Marino. Shortly after the Season 22 finale aired, Cole opened up about where fans can expect his character to be when Season 23 makes its debut. “I’m not sure how that’s going to play out, but I know it’s going to have something to do with revenge — whether accurate [by targeting crime boss Carla Marino] or misplaced…. [But] it can’t not have any consequences to him mentally.”

Could NCIS Bring Back an Original JAG Star – Again?

Across the main series, prequels such as NCIS: Origins, and the numerous NCIS spinoffs like the upcoming NCIS: Tony & Ziva, fans of the franchise have had plenty of opportunities to see their favorite characters crossover and interact with one another, if not be reimagined for another era entirely. Among those who haven’t been seen in quite some time is original JAG star David James Elliott, who portrayed Harmon Robb Jr. across all 10 seasons of the series and who most recently reprised the role on a three-episode arc on NCIS: Los Angeles. Elliott recently noted that, while he initially took the role due to his friendship with JAG writer and NCIS: Los Angeles showrunner R. Scott Gemmill, he would still be open to reprising the role again if asked. “I don’t really know any of the people on NCIS, but I guess if they came to me, I certainly would consider it,” Elliott said. “So who knows.”

What’s Next for the NCIS Franchise?

Though NCIS recently suffered a major setback on Paramount+, the franchise is preparing for a brand-new era that may see its return to streaming dominance. For decades, NCIS has focused on expanding its franchise with different iterations of the same show set in multiple cities across the nation: Washington D.C., Los Angeles, New Orleans, etc. Now, NCIS is taking more character-centered approaches to storytelling, specifically focusing on fan-favorite personalities from the original series. NCIS: Origins focuses on the early years of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’s career, with Austin Stowell taking over the iconic character from Mark Harmon, who provides some narration in the series. The prequel has been a massive hit so far, suggesting that more similar spinoffs could be in the pipeline following other popular characters from the NCIS franchise.

Other new series, including the upcoming Tony & Ziva spinoff, will focus on the continuing adventures of characters audiences have come to love over the years. Tony & Ziva features the long-awaited reunion between Michael Weatherly’s Anthony DiNozzo and Cote de Pablo’s Ziva David after their iconic on-again-off-again romance in the early years of NCIS. Their upcoming spinoff, set to premiere on September 4, will follow these two iconic NCIS agents as they recapture what audiences loved about the first seasons of NCIS. If successful, Tony & Ziva could continue with future seasons and potentially even inspire other similar series starring other popular characters who left NCIS. Thus, while it may not be as popular on streaming as in recent years, NCIS is far from finished.

NCIS is finally in danger of losing its spot on top of the streaming charts.
