The prequel series, which seeks to curate the early years of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, one of the most beloved characters in the long-running show, NCIS, has already been renewed for a second season. While the franchise boasts of several spin-offs, NCIS: Origins was the first prequel installment, and is set in the 1990s. In an incredibly heartwarming clip, the official NCIS: Origins Instagram account recently shared a video celebrating the one-year anniversary of the cast’s first table read. The clip captures the cast’s excitement at being part of the new show.

The video begins with Austin Stowell, who plays a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs, and Caleb Foote, who plays Randy, panning the camera around the room. They show off the actors, writers, and executives that have since helped to establish NCIS: Origins as its own show. The video then reveals the show’s cast introducing themselves and their characters before they begin reading their first scripts. Kicking things off in the clip is Kyle Schmid, who brings his character, Mike Franks, to life. The excitement across the board is quite palpable as everyone acquaints themselves with being part of a new adventure. It is fair to say that theirs wasn’t just blind excitement, as the show has since gone on to garner popularity in the months since its premiere.

Should Lala Survive, We Need To See Some Progress in Her Potential Romance With Gibbs

While it’s great to look back on fond memories, it is far more important to keep focused on the future. Season 1 of NCIS: Origins closed out on a potentially painful note, as Gibbs’ confidante, Lala Dominguez (Mariel Molino), was bleeding out in an overturned car. The pair were constantly teasing their audience in the first season about a potential romance, but despite all the simmering tension, we didn’t even get a kiss out of them. This, it’s fair to say, is quite frustrating for fans, and it’s a feeling shared by one of the show’s stars. While steering clear of whether Lala is alive or not, Molino reveals she’d like to see some progress between her character and Gibbs, should Lala survive. “If she is [alive], I hope that finally something happens with Lala and Gibbs. You know what I mean, come on, either kiss me or don’t,” the series star said in a previous interview.

NCIS: Origins was renewed for a second season in February, while the first season was still running, showcasing strong faith in the prequel series. David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal both serve as co-showrunners for the show, with the flagship series’ Gibbs, Mark Harmon, offering narration duties in the prequel series.

You can watch NCIS: Origins Season 1 now on Paramount+. Tune in to CBS this fall to see what happens in NCIS: Origins Season 2.

The first season of NCIS: Origins premiered in the fall of 2024 and ended its run in April 2025.
