James Foley, the acclaimed director behind films like\u00a0Glengarry Glen Ross<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Fifty Shades Darker<\/em>, has died at 71. He passed away peacefully in his sleep in Los Angeles after a years-long battle with brain cancer, his representative confirmed.<\/p>\n

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Foley left a distinct mark in both film and television. His movie credits include\u00a0At Close Range<\/em>\u00a0(1986),\u00a0Fear<\/em>\u00a0(1996), and\u00a0Fifty Shades Freed<\/em>\u00a0(2018). On television, he directed episodes of\u00a0House of Cards<\/em>,\u00a0Billions<\/em>, and\u00a0Twin Peaks<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Born in New York on December 28, 1953, Foley studied film at NYU and USC. A chance meeting with director Hal Ashby while still in school helped launch his Hollywood career. Foley\u2019s feature debut came with 1984\u2019s\u00a0Reckless<\/em>, followed by music videos for Madonna, including \u201cPapa Don\u2019t Preach,\u201d \u201cLive to Tell,\u201d and \u201cTrue Blue.\u201d<\/p>\n

He collaborated with major stars such as Sean Penn, Al Pacino, Reese Witherspoon, and Halle Berry. However, after a difficult experience filming\u00a0Perfect Stranger<\/em>\u00a0(2007), Foley took a break from movies before returning to helm the final two\u00a0Fifty Shades<\/em> installments.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am incredibly hands-on about everything,\u201d Foley said in a 2022 interview. \u201cThe best actors want to be directed\u2026 once you\u2019re on the same wavelength, you get incredible results.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fifty Shades Freed<\/em>\u00a0was his final project.<\/p>\n

Foley is survived by his brother Kevin, sisters Eileen and Jo Ann, and nephew Quinn. He was predeceased by another brother, Gerard.<\/p>\n
