CBS’ forthcoming prequel series, “NCIS: Origins,” has secured Austin Stowell for the lead role of a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs, as reported by Variety.
Set to debut in the 2024-2025 broadcast season, the series follows Gibbs as he embarks on his career as a newly minted special agent at the burgeoning NIS Camp Pendleton office in 1991. He navigates his way within a gritty team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks. Mark Harmon, who portrayed Gibbs for nearly two decades in the flagship series, serves as both narrator and executive producer.
Stowell, known for his recent roles in “Three Women” on Starz, “A Friend of the Family” on Peacock, and “Amazing Stories” on Apple TV+, joins the project with an impressive resume that includes appearances in films such as “Bridge of Spies,” “Whiplash,” and “Battle of the Sexes.” He is represented by Gersh and Yorn Levine Barnes.
The pilot for “NCIS: Origins” was co-written by David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal, both of whom bring a wealth of experience from their tenures on “NCIS.” They also serve as co-showrunners and executive producers alongside Mark Harmon and his son, Sean Harmon. The series is produced by CBS Studios.
This expansion marks the latest addition to the ever-growing “NCIS” franchise, which includes the main series, currently in its 21st season, as well as “NCIS: Hawaii” on CBS and “NCIS: Sydney” on Paramount+. The network has previously aired “NCIS: Los Angeles” and “NCIS: New Orleans.”
