Is Mark Harmon Returning To NCIS In 2024? Here’s What Gibbs Fans Need To Know?

Since its debut in 2003, Mark Harmon has been the face of the “JAG” spin-off, “NCIS.” Portraying the stern yet dutiful Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Harmon’s performance elevated the crime procedural to small-screen stardom, solidifying its place as a fan favorite. However, despite his integral role in shaping the show’s success, Harmon, like many of his co-stars, made the difficult decision not to see “NCIS” through to its still-unforeseeable end.

In a surprising turn of events, Harmon bid farewell to “NCIS” early on in Season 19, marking the end of an 18-year tenure on the series. His departure left audiences wondering whether he would ever return to the show he had become synonymous with. As fans eagerly speculate about the future of “NCIS” without its iconic lead, Harmon’s decision to leave has undoubtedly left a significant impact on the beloved crime drama.
In a surprising twist, years after Mark Harmon’s departure from “NCIS,” news has emerged of his return to the franchise in a unique capacity. As the “NCIS” universe continues to expand, one of its latest endeavors is a prequel series delving into Gibbs’ formative years, titled “NCIS: Origins.” Austin Stowell takes the lead as the young Gibbs, while Harmon’s involvement as an executive producer and narrator hints at his portrayal of the older Gibbs, albeit in a narratorial role. At present, it remains a mystery whether Harmon will reprise his iconic role in person during the series. Additionally, it’s worth noting that Harmon isn’t the only member of his family contributing to “NCIS: Origins.”
“NCIS” enthusiasts have been treated to glimpses of young Gibbs through flashbacks, notably in the Season 18 episode “Everything Starts Somewhere.” This installment unveils the backstory of Gibbs’ encounter with the esteemed medical examiner, Donald “Ducky” Mallard (portrayed by Adam Campbell), many years before the events of “NCIS.” Notably, in these flashback sequences and others, young Gibbs is brought to life by none other than Mark Harmon’s son, Sean. With Sean Harmon’s involvement behind the camera, his contributions to “NCIS: Origins” are highly anticipated as the franchise continues to explore the early days of Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
Sean Harmon, alongside his father, will assume the role of executive producer on the forthcoming prequel series, and his enthusiasm for the project is palpable. “I always felt there was a tale worth telling about his earlier years, so I am thrilled to be stepping into a producing role alongside [writers Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North] and my dad as we tell this story and reveal a new side of this beloved character,” he expressed when “NCIS: Origins” was first announced in January. Sean Harmon’s personal connection to the Gibbs character, having witnessed his father’s portrayal evolve over the years and having had the opportunity to portray young Gibbs himself, adds a layer of significance to his involvement. With “NCIS: Origins” poised to premiere in 2024, it marks another exciting chapter in the expansive “NCIS” universe.
